Winter 2022-2023

This winter has been very good to Providence.  This will be our last summer to test out new gear before we start America’s Great Loop in 2024. We’ve been receiving gadgets and goodies to make life aboard easier and safer for our trip.

The prop protector bolts to the propeller shaft directly forward of the prop and it’s razor sharp edge is designed to cut rope and any other debris that migh get caught up in the prop. There are lot of crab pots in Florida and while I like crabs, I don’t want their ropes tangled up in my propeller!

New LED lights to reduce power consumption and they last longer.

This extendable boat hook is amazing! It will loop the bitter end of a dock line through a ring on a mooring ball or dock cleat and return it back to you without you ever having to leave the boat! Now if we can just keep from dropping it in the water we’ll be good.

This is called a Slide Anchor. The top half is a moving hammer of sorts and will drive the pointed wedge into the ground or sandy beach. The stainless steel cleat will attach to the anchor with a welded snap link and we can tie our stern line to the cleat just like any other cleat. This pair of anchors will come in VERY handy while we are in the Bahamas!

We needed to get a new propane tank. The one onboard is WAY past its safety date stamp and sooner or later will fail. We don’t want that to happen anyway so we are replacing it as a matter of personal safety. YIKES!

I just took delivery of 210ft of 1/4 inch, ISO grade 40, hot dip galvanized anchor chain. It has a working load limit of 2600 pounds. That’s a lot of wind and wave action we can deal with very effectively. At .73 lbs/ft that adds 153.3 pounds to our 44 pound anchor for a total of 197.3 pounds keeping us in place. That should keep us firmly attached to the bottom and will let us sleep peacefully at night. Now if I can just control the weather…

Melissa got a wetsuit “shorty” to help keep her warm when we get into the cool Bahamian water in the winter months. It will also help with buoyancy while we are snorkeling!

Departure date, July 2024. Ok peeps, let’s start planning tentative dates and locations! We’ve already got a few on the books. I’m getting so excited I can hardly stand the wait!! LETS GO!!!
